Fort Davis was a frontier military post, active from 1854 to 1891. It was strategically located to protect emigrants, mail coaches and freight wagons on major roads and trails of the Indian Wars era. It was decommissioned when the Indian Wars largely ended and transcontinental railroads were constructed further north.
