Dalton Highway Crossing the Yukon River

Dalton Highway Crossing the Yukon River

This is the only bridge that spans the Yukon River in Alaska. It carries both the Dalton Highway and the Alaska Pipeline, and was a vital link in pipeline construction. Special engineering allows the length of the bridge to change by almost 2 feet between the summer and winter months. The large temperature differences must also be accommodated by the pipeline itself all along its length from Prudhoe Bay/Arctic Ocean in the north to Valdez Marine Terminal on the south-central coast of Alaska.
