Green Tree Ants (Oecophylla Smaragdina)

Green Tree Ants (Oecophylla Smaragdina)

Beware the green tree ants: they are relatively aggressive and bite through the skin if they latch onto you, squirting formic acid from their abdomen into the wound! They nest in trees, farm some insects for honeydew, and hunt other insects and spiders for "meat." Fortunately, no one inadvertently disturbed them as we walked past on the trail to the last Mitchell Falls overlook.
