The Explora company has purchased, and now protects from further development, a large portion of the Puritama River canyon, upstream from Guatin Canyon. The Puritama thermal springs give rise to the river, forming a series of eight large pools of thermal water in the primarily dry Atacama Desert landscape. This provides a refuge for native flora and fauna, as well as local and tourist visitors.
